Cape Fear Studios, Inc. Mission Statement To involve, educate, and enrich Cumberland County and surrounding communities with the opportunity to create and freely view art.

Ann Griffin, a Fayetteville, NC, native is a graduate of UNC Greensboro with a Concentration in Recreation & Tourism Management. Ann retired last fall from Habitat for Humanity after 7 years as the Executive Director. She has many years of nonprofit administrative experience to include Cape Fear Botanical Garden, Methodist College, Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, and the Fayetteville Dogwood Festival. Ann says, “My first love is my family, all of whom keep me very busy. My hobbies include reading, gardening, sewing, and dabbling in arts and crafts. My most recent arts endeavor is wire wrapping for jewelry, which I’m enjoying learning all about. I’m really enjoying my first few weeks at Cape Fear Studios and am looking forward to getting to know everyone.”

Cape Fear Studios presents February 28-March 25 Main Gallery: National Jewelry Exhibit featuring the jewelry art/design of Molly Dingledine (Bozeman MT/Asheville NC) Joanna Gollberg (Asheville NC) Sean Hill (Tucson AZ) Jason Janow (Asheville NC) Maggie Joynt (Fayetteville NC)

Exhibit Sponsors: Dr. and Mrs. Richard Roux Gail Leget MD and Thomas Walden, Jr. MD

We were glad that Maggie Joynt was able to attend the opening of the show, Texture and movement are key features of Maggie’s work. Many of the pieces show a strong love of nature.

Jason Janow’s cast sterling rings and bracelets feature the delicate texture of natural objects and colorful gemstones and river rocks.

Sean Hill’s bracelets and rings are created from gem-grade resin encorporated into a framework of precious metal.

Joanna Gollberg pairs sterling silver with rough and faceted colorful gemstones to create bold necklaces, bracelets, pendants and earrings.

Molly Dingledine shows her love of nature through the flowers and leaves that make up her mixed metal pieces. Many of the pieces are accented with pearls.

Charlie Rigg continued as a guest artist with his pottery shown in the front of the gallery. The back wall featured the silk screen and mixed media works of Kayla Seedig, a UNCP student, who was the runner-up for the Lois Ferrari Memorial Art Scholarship.

An unusual feature in CFS during March and April were these pottery pieces painted in Picasso style by local artists, including some of our artists. Pieces were located in various art venues around town while the Picasso exhibit was at Methodist University. An on-line auction for the pieces helped to offset the cost of the show. Some of our artists had hands on experience with the Picasso exhibit. Sandie, Gail, Annette and Rose were the “art handling team”. The piece Gail is holding is one of two originals that are valued (together) at $500,000!

A sad part of February’s 4th Friday was saying goodbye to Ellen Brooks. Artists listened while Ellen told us of some of her plans for the future. At least Leah found something good about the event; that chocolate cake was good!

Cape Fear Studios presents March 28-April 22 Main Gallery: North Carolina Faculty/Student “Mentor” Exhibit

Allyson Watts, UNCP, student of Dina Nobles with her piece ‘Time Dime’ Chuck Lawson, FTCC Faculty, stands in front of his piece.

Socorro Hernandez-Hinek, FSU, with student Monica Griffin. Monica’s pottery frog is at the right and her professor’s work is behind them.

Michael Romagano, FTCC, with student Patricia Counts. Her piece is between them and his “Periodic Table” is on the wall behind him.

From top left clockwise: Silvana Foti, Methodist College, with student Loreto Oreckinto. Loreto’s print is above Ms. Foti and the original woodcut from which the print was made is above Loreto. Margie Labadie, UNCP, is the instructor of Kayla Seedig. Kayla’s work “Phantom Nostalgia” is above that of her instructor. Melvin Morris, student UNCP, studies with Joseph Begnaud. John Labadie, UNCP and Eddie L. Harris, IV. Mr. Labadie’s work is between them while Eddie’s is to the left. If this young man looks familiar, it’s because he is Eric Longley, the Lois Ferrari Memorial Art Scholarship winner. He studies with Soni Martin at FSU.

Robin Teas, FTCC professor, exhibited her sculpture entitled ‘Ophelia’. Her student, Heidi Tousignant, showed her sculpture ‘Heart.’ Robin is on our Board of Directors.

Something new! We had a 50/50 raffle during 4th Friday in March. Jaylene Nordgren sold tickets and drafted the young man at left to draw tickets. Above the winner waits for his loot. Another new feature was a sales table at the back of the gallery. The items remained on sale throughout the exibit.

Delightful music was provided by flutist Susan Lees.

Cape Fear Studios presents April 25 - May 20 Main Gallery: 2014 Annual Anniversary Artist Members’ Exhibit

The back of the studio was hopping with good music provided by guitarist Gage Smart, good food, and lots of artists demonstrating their skill. Brandon Bass was hard at work on a portrait. Look at the next page to see what Kathy Flood was working on. How does Sylvia Kubilus-Elam work with those tiny beads? Quite well obviously.

Here’s Kathy with her watercolor painting of her daughter.

Jill Dieffenbach was at her usual place in the pottery studio.

The front of the gallery stayed plenty busy also. Above left, Bill White, discusses woodworking with Chris Boerner and some of Chris’ family. At right Chris, visiting artist, holds one of his favorite pieces. Several of his pieces with their beautifully figured woods are shown below left. Below right Sylvia shows some of her finished pieces to two enchanted young ladies.

Outreach Programs with the Transportation Museum February 22 Mardi Gras masks were a big hit, even if the kids didn’t always do what we expected.

Reading Across America in honor of Dr. Seuss This may have been the most successful event at Cape Fear Studios–at least if you go by a head count. We ended our head count of visitors at 380 people and that may be under the actual total because it was so packed it was hard to see who came in, especially if they came in through the Transportation Museum. This event gave us greatPR and 600 fliers about CFS went home. It worked really well with the Transportation Museumnext door and being able to share the flow of guests. One reason for success was Brandon “Cat in the Hat” Bass.

Brandon had children and adults “eating out of his hand” with his reading skill, sketches (that he was GIVING away), and his continuous banter in Dr. Seuss style rhyme as he greeted every person who came in the door.

Meanwhile, in the back of the studio there was at times chaos as our ladies tried to help all these children make a goldfish in a bowl. All the tables and chairs were occupied for most of the afternoon. As you can see from the satisfied look on the young lady above they accomplished their mission.

Over in the Transportation Museum Pandy Autry and other readers were reading about the surprising things found on Mulberry Street. The children were using a map of Fayetteville and stickers to show what they have seen or would like to see on our streets. Even the doors to our building were decked out in Dr. Seuss style.

Back to our regularly scheduled Outreach Programs April 12 was Kite Day

We had quite a few youngsters stop by to make kites. These was almost no wind so it was humorous to see the little one trying to get their kites to fly. Some of our artists decided to try something new by having hot dogs and coffee for sale. As the day warmed up iced tea might have been more appreciated. While we were outside LaMerle Deca was inside with a student of her own.

On May 3, Squish Day, most of our participants did just that–they squished the salt/flour playdough that Heidi Bleazey from the Transportation Museum and several of our artists had made and colored. A few did manage to make a design, but most put their clay back in the ziplock baggies to go home with them.

On January 25 folks of all ages were invited to paint a trivet for their valentines. The young ladies above look too young to have a valentine to me, but they seem to be having fun painting their tiles.

Did you know that next year is our twenty-fifth anniversary? Plans to celebrate are in beginning stages, but one thing we want to do is have a tee-shirt to commemorate the event.

Call for Designs All members artists can submit a design for the tee-shirt and other uses. The design will be due by the January Member’s Meeting.

If you have ideas for celebrating this milestone please share them with members of the board.

This and That On February 23 several of the artists gathered at CFS to give it a good cleaning. Evidently things got a little messier before they got better. The kiln room and supply closet looked really good when they were finished. It would appear that they cleaned up some food in the process.

Rose Kennedy was recently juried into the Southeastern Pastel Societies’16th Juried International Exhibition. The opening reception was May 15th at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art in Atlanta. The piece accepted is “Vantage Point”, 12x18, pastel. The painting depicts the Pisgah Covered Bridge near Asheboro. Rose said it was a pleasant surprise and a real honor. Rose was also juried into the North Carolina Statewide Exhibit, On Common Ground, Pastels from the Mountains to the Sea. This exhibit is Showing at the Cornwell Center in Charlotte from May 1 - 30. Last, but not least, Rose was chosen to participate in the 2014 Piedmont Plein Air Paint-Out in High Point, in September (18-21). She is one of thirty plein air painters from across the US participating in the 4 day event that supports the Boys and Girls Club of Greater High Point. WAY TO GO ROSE!

Jaylene Nordgren recently worked with Terry Sandford’s Global Studies students who were studying the Byzantine Empire with their teacher Sharyn Stevens. Jaylene helped 70 students–not all in the same class thankfully–to design a mosaic bowl. The first day the students learned to cut tile and glue the pieces to form their designs. Several days later she showed them how to grout their pieces. On March 23 Ethel Ethington invited studio artists to meet her at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden to discuss how photography can, in some cases quite literally, change a life. The weather was not cooperative, but we sat in the gathering hall where we could at least look outside. Since we couldn’t go outside Ethel told us a little about how she uses photography to help her clients. We looked at some photos Linda Sue took before the skies opened up and some taken at Pauline Longest Nature Trail at Methodist University. The magnolia at left is Linda Sue’s attempt at Georgia O’Keefe style. The beech tree speaks of strength and perserverance

On April 26 Nancy Edge instructed the Emerging Young Leaders sponsored by AKA Sorority in making Ikebana vases shaped like leaves. Ikebana is a minimalist form of Japanese flower arranging that emphasizes shape, line, and form. The finished vases are at the right.

Two of our artist’s designs were chosen for the Cultural Heritage Tourism Project funded by a grant from the Arts Council. The dogwoods will be displayed until October to showcase local artists and tourist attractions in the downtown area. The visitors watching Karen paint were bemused by our dogwoods.

On May 3 two of our artists and one board member participated in Eastover Founder’s Day. Sandra Williams (above) and Nancy Edge did tag team lessons on throwing pottery on the wheel. From watching them for a little while I think it was another version of Squish Day.

Curtis Barnes demonstrated how to make whirligigs.

“The arts nourish the soul.”
